Some 6502 sources list the 0x82 mnemonic as DOP (double NOP), with 2 dummy bytes as argument. The above routine dynamically change the X register value using the DOP undocumented opcode. Since the opcode DOP in fact has only 1 dummy byte as argument, they apparently dropped this piece of code due to it didn't work as expected.
